HALF-YEARLY GENERAL MEETING

Half - Yearly General Meeting Report

July 2006.

This year’s half-yearly General Meeting was held at the Club’s premises in Valletta on July the 2nd and started at 10.00 a.m.

First item on the agenda was the reading of the minutes of the January 2006 meeting. These were approved by the Members present for both meetings.

President Mr. Carmel Debattista started his speech by reminding everyone that 2006 is a very special year for our Club and that the Committee has been organizing various activities to commemorate our 25th anniversary. Such activities entail expenses and Mr. Debattista expressed his disappointment that sometimes these activities are not attended by the number of Members one would expect.

He thanked the Members present on the day, those Members who sold and returned the annual lottery ticket booklets and also those Members who made financial donations to the Club.

The President mentioned this year’s January Darts Ranking Competition won by our Member Mr. Stanmore.

The usual 5-a-side football tournament was replaced by a 7-a-side football tournament open for local football nurseries. This tournament was very well organized and the Committee was praised from all the participating nurseries. The format of this tournament will be retained in the coming years and a shield will be awarded to the winning team. This will be kept for one year.

After thanking the Fund Raising Committee for their hard work Mr. Debattista went on to surprise all those present by announcing that Tottenham Hotspur and England legend Paul Gascoigne shall be visiting our Club in the near future.

Mr. Lino Bartolo, Chairperson of the Fund Raising Committee gave an overview of his sub-Committee’s work.

Mr. Bartolo said that monthly dinners are being organized at the Club in order to raise funds to cover the 25th anniversary’s celebrations. He also invited Members who would like to attend to contact the Club for further information on future dates. The Chairperson also mentioned the highly successful April reception in Zebbug and thanked all those who attended.

Mr. Bartolo gave details about the 7-a-side football tournament. Apart from the trophy presented to the winning team, all the boys from the different nurseries were presented with a commemorative medal. The aim of the tournament is to promote the name of Tottenham Hotspur F.C.

Mr. Bartolo also invited our Members to attend the events organized by our Club from time to time.

Although it is not the norm for a financial report to be read during a half-yearly meeting, the treasurer Mr. Godwin Cilia compared the first six months of this financial year with the first six months of the previous year. The report shows that last year’s financial status was healthier than this year’s.

During the time allocated to the floor Mr. Raymond Aquilina enquired about the Club’s official website. Secretary Alex Cilia stated that although the official website has not been functional for a while because of technical and logistic difficulties, the Club still has an official voice on the internet and this can be found on spursmalta.blogspot.com. This blog is run by Magazine Officer Mr. Mark Mizzi.

Mr. Cilia encouraged Members to log on this site in order to read about the Club’s activities.

Mr. Aquilina added that this could be one way of reducing the postage bills.

The winners of the annual lottery were the following:

1) 6 months membership to the M.F.A. swimming pool in Ta’ Qali for 2 persons - Mr. George Micallef.
2) 2 day return tickets to Sicily By Catamaran (Virtu’ Rapid) - Mrs. Claire Micallef.
3) Gents watch sponsored by Herbies Jewellery - Mr. Norbert Muscat.
4) Dinner for 2 at Rojohn Restaurant - Mr. John Muscat.
5) Hamper of foreign wine sponsored by Mr. Edward Ciantar - Mr. F.R. Wirth.
6) Hamper of local wine sponsored by Mr. Emanuel Cordina - Mr. J.M. Farrell.

The meeting ended with finger food and drinks sponsored by the barman Mr. Carmel Debattista.

Alex Cilia.
Club Secretary.

HERBERT CELEBRATES HIS BIRTHDAY

Our friend and Club Member Herbert Azzopardi celebrated his birthday last week. On Tuesday we joined him for a boys night out at Ta' l-Ingliz Restaurant in Mgarr. The usual suspects indulged in a feast of pasta, game and other traditional Maltese food...all washed down with very good red wine.
On Friday our partners and wives joined us to celebrate with Herbert and his family. We enjoyed delicious platters and superb fine wine at Cantina Sant Angelo...a fascinating wine bar in Birgu run by our Member Edward and his lovely wife Rose.
Here are some opictures of the occasion....Herbert is the guy in the first picture.

Subject: Congratulations from Malta.

Hello to all Swiss fans

As secretary to the Tottenham Hotspur Malta committee, I am really pleased to hear that your Club has been officially recognized by T.H.F.C.

I am writing this letter on behalf of my committee and all its members to congratulate your committee on achieving such a feat. This year our Club is celebrating its 25th anniversary since it was founded back in 1981.

I understand that it took your committee a lot of work and time in order to achieve the status of official recognition, because my club went through this some time ago, but it is very satisfying when your efforts go rewarded. Congratulations once more, and I hope that a cooperation and friendship between our two clubs should prosper in the near future, after all we are all members of one big family, the Tottenham Hotspur family.

Kind Regards
Alex Cilia

JASON TAME ENJOYS HIS HOLIDAY IN MALTA
Another Spurs fan writes about his visit to our Island and the Spurs Supporters Club in Valletta

Hello,
My name is Jason...you may remember me as we visited your club in Valletta on Sunday 18th June. I have both the old and the new crests on my lower legs.
My partner and I visited Malta for a one week holiday last week. We attended a wedding on Saturday 17th June, where we were advised to visit the Club by Norman Vella and Francis Portelli.
We returned this afternoon and felt we had to write to thank you for the experience we had at your Club. I have been a huge Spurs fan all my life and had intended to visit the official Malta Spurs Supporters Club on previous visits but never got round to it. We managed it this time. We felt we had to email to thank the staff, especially Nenu, his customers and all involved at the Club for such a lovely experience.
I was very impressed with the memorabilia displayed on the walls and how welcome we felt. You are now high on our list of important places to revisit. We are now back in the UK and if there is anything that we can do to help or support the Maltese Supporters Club, just ask.
Thank you again.

Jason Tame.

CORRESPONDENCE
Michael, Katie and James Frost write to our Club
Hi,
Not sure if you can remeber me but I visit your Island most years and always pop in to see Charlie at the club. Unfortunatly last November I had a big operation to remove cancer from my tongue, my friends in Malta phoned me every week to see how I was getting on and of course never stopped asking me to go over.
I promised that as soon as I felt I was on the road to recovery I would come over. That day came during February and of course we had to visit the club and Charlie who looked after me very well indeed. I must say the visit to Malta was a turning point for me and I have not looked back yet although not quite there yet.
Good luck with your celebrations this year and I hope to be over again in August. Kindest Regards Michael, Katie and James Frost

EDITORIAL

This is the editorial that will appear on "The Cockerel" that will be published and distributed to Members of the Tottenham Hotspur Suporters Club Malta in June.

I welcome you to another edition of The Cockerel which will reach you at the end of a great season for Spurs and on the eve of the World Cup finals in Germany.

Spurs’ season could have been better of course. We were so near that Champions League place that it still hurts when I remember that we will not be competing in Europe’s elite competition. But, objectively speaking, I do think it has been a very successful season. We are back in Europe after so many years and if there is one positive to take from the fact that we will be playing in the UEFA Cup instead of the Champions League it is that our young players will go through a smoother learning curve.

Qualifying for Europe is only one of the positives of this season. Players like Michael Dawson, Ledley King and Robbie Keane have signed new contracts with the club and our Reserves side have been crowned Champions. Mansion are our new sponsors with a deal amongst the top ten in the World while the Club has splashed out on Bayer Leverkusen’s Dimitar Berbatov who admitted that he preferred Spurs over Manchester United. Moreover, Paul Robinson, Michael Carrick, Jermaine Jenas and Aaron Lennon have all been picked by Sven Goran Erikkson to join England’s World Cup party in Germany. At the moment of writing Michael Dawson and Jermaine Defoe are on stand by.

The Club is also forging ahead with plans for a new training complex, an artist’s impression of which is on the front cover of this magazine.

As you all know the local club is celebrating its 25th anniversary so we encourage you to visit our premises in Valletta and also join us for the activities we are organizing.

Last April a group of about 27 Members traveled to London for the home game against Manchester United. Although the result was not what one might have wished for, a great time was had by all. A delegation of the Committee also visited Chigwell to present the Player of the Year Award to Edgar Davids. A big thanks go to all the people who made this visit possible, particularly Edward Ciantar from our Club and Martin Jol, Chris Hughton, John Fennelly and David Felstein from Tottenham Hotspur FC.

Hope you enjoy the Summer….and the World Cup finals!

DINNER AT RUBINO

17 of us went out to dinner at Rubino in Valletta yesterday. The food was great (in quality and quantity) and the wine never stopped flowing. A great time was had by all...though I don't think our managers/ employers at our places of work are really appreciating it this morning. As was said elsewhere Torres was at the table with us as you can see from the first picture.

Cocktail Party

On Sunday 30 April the Spurs Supporters Club Malta held a cocktail party for Memebrs and Supporters at the Midway hall in Zebbug. The function, which was part of the Club's 25th anniversary celebrations, was very well attended and everyone could enjoy good food and an open bar.
Discussion centred on the win against Bolton earlier in the afternoon. All agreed that while it was not a good performance, the team showed great strength of character in managing to get three points frojm a game in which we were dominated for long stretches. Dawson, Lennon and Carrick were in for special praise from our Members.
We also agreed that thegame was yet another stress test !!! We just hope our heart holds out for the last two games of the season, ie West Ham v Spurs and Barca v Arsenal :-)
We also talked about our recent tour to White Hart Lane and started planning for next season's European Tour !!!.
We took the occasion to officially launch the new Supporters Club logo as approved by Tottenham Hotspur FC

Champions League
Only two games to go now and 6 points would guarantee us fourth place. Sadly it might not be enough as the scum could still win the Champions League and relegate us to the UEFA Cup. Personally I would have preferred Milan in the final. I think that they are a more solid team and would have been more difficult for the Gunners to beat.
However all is not lost and Barca can do us a big favour. Many (including Wenger) say that the Barca defence is not that reliable but it's not like they are conceding many goals. Against Milan (who have players like Kaka, Schevchenko, Inzaghi and Gilardino) they coped very well. Although Milan had a very good game in the Nou Camp they did were not able to create chances. On the other hand it was Barca who had the opportunities and Mialn have to thank Dida for keeping their goal intact. Barca do have the players to inflict damage on the gooners....so let's all be Catalans for the Champions League final.
One final note... whatever happens (even if we don't finish fourth) we should still be proud of our team. We have made great progress and we must realize that with two games to go we are already in Europe and fighting for something. Some years ago we were singing "We want our Tottenham back". Seems we got it. COME ON YOU SPURS

MALTA SPURS IN LONDON- APRIL 2006

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Club Malta is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

As part of the celebrations we oraganized a tour to White Hart lane for the Manchester United game. On the day after the game a delegation from the committee made a visit to Chigwell where we presented the footballer of the year award to Edgar Davids. It was a great day for all as we were very well looked after by the people at Chigwell. Here are some of the pictures.
Before the game we also met our friend Sundance who is a regular poster on Come On You Spurs. He presented us with a Spurs shirt signed by Spurs legends including Klinsmann and Mabbutt.
